Sunday brunch has become a bit of a tradition for me and my love, at least on those occasional Sundays that we haven’t managed to over-schedule ourselves. And I’ll admit, we usually enjoy partaking in one or two brunch-appropriate cocktails as a way to celebrate a rare, relaxing Sunday. I should also mention that I’m always looking for new ways to use up any leftovers we have in the fridge (you can ask Mike how grumpy I get when I have to throw out food that has gone bad!) So this Sunday, while whipping up a tasty spinach, tomato, and mozzarella omelet, I took a little shopping trip through our fridge to see what kind of cocktail I could create. I was happy to find that we still had some watermelon juice from a recent barbecue as well as a container of orange juice, and I had a feeling the gin and lemon vodka we had in the liquor cabinet would be a perfect complement to the fruit juices. The “morning sunrise” part was a happy accident. Once I poured the watermelon juice into the glass and topped it with the orange juice, gin, and vodka, I noticed the layers. Since it was Sunday morning (and since I missed the actual sunrise, not that I ever see it), it was an obvious moniker for this tasty beverage. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
- Watermelon Juice
- Orange Juice (no pulp)
- Gin
- Lemon Vodka
- Pour equal parts watermelon juice and orange juice in a glass with ice (I used a little less than ½ cup of each juice in a tall glass).
- Top with one part gin and ½ part lemon vodka (I used one shot of Bombay Sapphire and a half shot of Smirnoff's new lemon sorbet vodka).
- Admire your work, stir, and enjoy!
- I had some leftover watermelon juice sitting around after a recent barbecue. All I did to make it was cube up some watermelon, throw it in the blender for a minute or so, and then strain it through a fine mesh sieve.
